Orbit
Total Commander for the Mac. Every disk, server and cloud drive, side by side.
[orbit.faur.sh ↗]
Finder has no dual pane, no keyboard-driven batch operations, and no built-in SFTP, S3 or cloud browsing.
Total Commander has all of that, but only on Windows.
Orbit brings that workflow to macOS natively, with its own protocol clients instead of relying on OS mounts.
SFTP runs on a patched SwiftNIO SSH, with Ed25519/ECDSA/RSA keys, PuTTY .ppk v3, 2FA and SCP fallback.
FTP/FTPS is written from scratch on NIO, with TLS session reuse and server-to-server FXP copy.
No OS mounts. It works the same inside the App Store sandbox.
Local disks, archives, SFTP, FTP/FTPS, WebDAV, S3 and cloud drives all open as panes. Every backend implements one provider protocol, so one copy engine copies between any two.
For each copy the engine tries rename, then a server-side copy, then an APFS clone, then streaming. Files are written to a temporary name and renamed into place atomically. Pause, resume, cancel and retry with backoff.
Reads 15+ formats with libarchive built from source and patched for 7-Zip AES-256. Handles encrypted multi-volume RAR, archives inside archives, and blocks path-traversal entries.
File names are turned into byte sort keys once and compared with memcmp. Measured on 100k items: sort by name in 25 ms, filter in 2 ms. F3 view memory-maps local files and reads remote files in ranges.
About 300 commands, shared by menus, the F-key bar, a fuzzy command palette, AppleScript and App Intents. Keymap presets for Mac, Total Commander, Windows and Dolphin.
Total Commander-style multi-rename with regex, EXIF fields and undo. Folder sync between any two backends. Remote edit that re-uploads on save. Finder Sync and File Provider extensions.
